We stand in solidarity with our scholars today who walked out in a student-led protest, led by lead organizer and Senior Daniel Gomez to demand changes regarding safety culture in our schools and to stand with and for victims of sexual misconduct, sexual harrassment, and sexual assault. Before leaving the building to protest, students made signs saying, “Students stand with victims. We deserve to feel safe.” The students then proceeded to walk out at the end of Period 5 to join their peers on the outdoor basketball courts to rally around these important issues. They marched to the turf, where they heard inspirational speeches, testimonies, and shared demands for their school, district, and community to heighten awareness on sexual assault. The rally continued in a collective walk off-campus and in the surrounding neighborhood, where many community members and passersby showed their support for the students.
The strength of their individual and collective student voices was powerful, with scholars occupying the surrounding streets near the school chanting, “What do we want? Change! When do we want it? Now!” along with “Yes means yes, and no means no”. After the conclusion of the protest, Principal Parrish and Daniel sat down to take measures to honor the voices of students.
“In the meeting we had, we discussed possible agreements that they are willing to act on,” said Daniel Gomez. “Unfortunately and as hard as it is, DPS is unable to give further information on any specific investigations regarding sexual assault. However, NEC is more than willing to give more information about what Title IX is and the steps a student can take to report a concern. We will be working on bringing a required consent curriculum for students to take so that they can be more educated on these topics.”
In a meeting after today’s student-led protest, Gomez advocated for the following, highest priority actions to take place this school year and for the 2022-2023 school year to address the changes he and the student body have advocated for. Principal Stacy Parrish is in full agreement with the following changes and supports leveraging student voice to drive school improvement efforts.
To address the issue of students not feeling heard on important issues impacting them in their school, Daniel Gomez will be nominated to the NEC School Leadership Committee on April 19 at 4PM as both a Student Voice and Leadership representative and a key ally and advocate in this work.
To address the issue of students feeling safe at school, specifically around reporting sex based discrimination and sexual harrassment, Student Voice and Leadership will empower our student body with understanding Title IX policies, how to report allegations of misconduct, who to report it to, and what the process is they are entitled to and protected by law.
To address the issue of where to find information on reporting Title IX policies and procedures accessible 24 hours a day, NEC school leadership will ensure students have access to buttons on the nec.dpsk12.org homepage, similar to those found on the district Discrimination, Prevention, and Response webpage, where anyone can submit a report any time of day.
To address the issue of supporting complainants, the NEC Title IX Coordinator and their designee will ensure that transparent procedures are in place to report if any supportive measures implemented are ineffective or not addressing the issue.
To address the issue of students requesting a class to educate them on Consent, NEC School Leadership will support the funding for a teacher to deliver a Comprehensive Health Education class (Board Policy IKF – R3) in the 2022-2023 school year to students, one year ahead of the DPS requirement of offering it in 2023-2024 as a graduation requirement.

Nos solidarizamos con nuestros estudiantes hoy que salieron en una protesta dirigida por estudiantes, dirigida por el organizador principal y estudiante de último año Daniel Gómez para exigir cambios con respecto a la cultura de seguridad en nuestras escuelas y apoyar y defender a las víctimas de conducta sexual inapropiada, acoso sexual y asalto sexual. Antes de salir del edificio para protestar, los estudiantes hicieron carteles que decían: “Los estudiantes están con las víctimas. Merecemos sentirnos seguros”. Luego, los estudiantes procedieron a salir al final del Período 5 para unirse a sus compañeros en las canchas de baloncesto al aire libre para discutir estos importantes temas. Marcharon hacia el césped, donde escucharon discursos inspiradores, testimonios y demandas compartidas para que su escuela, distrito y comunidad aumenten la conciencia sobre la agresión sexual. En una reunión después de la protesta liderada por los estudiantes de hoy, Gómez abogó por las siguientes acciones de máxima prioridad que se llevarán a cabo este año escolar y para el año escolar 2022-2023 para abordar los cambios que él y el alumnado han defendido. La directora Stacy Parrish está totalmente de acuerdo con los siguientes cambios y apoya aprovechar la voz de los estudiantes para impulsar los esfuerzos de mejora escolar.
