Ms. Sunderland (she, her, hers) moved to Colorado from Chicago, Illinois, in 2007. She has been engaging with young people – as an attorney, nonprofit program director, and educator – since 1994. After earning a BA in Classical Languages from Carleton College in Minnesota and a JD (law degree) from the University of California, Berkeley, she served as an advocate for youth in foster care in Chicago and started a tutoring and environmental education program for children and teens in her neighborhood. In Colorado, she worked for several nonprofits, as well as a special education paraprofessional. She earned her MA in Special Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 2015. Ms. Sunderland has taught special education at NEC since 2019. Since 2022, she has led the Transition to Independence Program (TIP) for 18-21 year-old students. She loves helping her students explore their strengths and passions, build skills, and make plans for their futures. She lives in Aurora with her wife Angela and their two cats, Walnut and Chocolate Chip, who help her with gardening and home improvement projects.
